Double-Skin Façades for Building Retrofitting and Climate Change: A Case Study in Central Italy

In recent years, the need to make built environment more resilient and adaptable climate change has become essential. Europe, this aspect concerns most existing buildings with several deficiencies from energy efficiency point of view, considering they were designed before introduction modern codes. Among various strategies for building retrofitting, Double-Skin Façades (DSFs) have gained attention due their potential improve performance inhabitants’ comfort. This research aims evaluate use adequately DSFs restoration buildings. detail, DSF configurations are applied a residential located in Central Italy investigated under present future conditions, estimated through regional models. The installation multi-layered façades, particularly Multi-Storey typology, greatly reduces consumption increases expected comfort rates. When selected configuration was considered, results underline decrease annual requirement about 37–56% up 42–59%, respectively, 2030 2070. Moreover, using multi-layer façades can increase indoor minimum operative temperatures 3.8% during coldest months reduce maximum summer ones by 1.9–3.8%, raising levels.
